A Long, Happy, and Healthy Life Together

The journey with one of our puppies is more than just the initial adoption — it's about nurturing a long, happy and healthy life together. Here's what you should know about the health and life expectancy of our beloved Bernedoodles.

1. Life Expectancy

On average, Bernedoodles live 12 – 15 years, with smaller varieties often reaching the upper end of the range.

For example:

  • Standard size: about 12 – 15 years
  • Mini size: up to 14 – 17 years
  • Tiny/Micro size: possibly 15 – 18 years

Keep in mind that these are estimates—the actual lifespan depends on many factors including size, genetics, lifestyle, and healthcare.

2. Common Health Considerations

While Bernedoodles are generally healthy and benefit from hybrid vigor, they can inherit health risks from their parent breeds. Responsible breeders screen for major conditions. Some of the health concerns to be aware of include:

  • Joint issues such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia.
  • Eye conditions (for example, progressive retinal atrophy [PRA]).
  • Allergies – skin or food-related.
  • For larger size dogs especially: risks such as gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) in deep-chested breeds.
  • Obesity is a major factor that can exacerbate other health issues (especially joints & heart).

3. How You Can Support a Long, Healthy Life

Here are some actionable tips for owners to maximize the health and longevity of their Bernedoodle:

  • Choose a high-quality, age-appropriate diet, and avoid overfeeding.
  • Keep them at a healthy weight – excess weight can shorten lifespan and damage joints.
  • Exercise daily: even for smaller varieties, mental and physical stimulation matter.
  • Schedule regular veterinary check-ups, including early screening for the health issues mentioned above.
  • Maintain good grooming and hygiene especially for ears, coat, and teeth (to avoid skin/ear problems, infections, etc.).
  • Provide a loving, stable home environment — stress and lack of socialisation can impact well-being over time.
